How to achieve 80+ Scores in PTE

PTE Core Format

The PTE Core full-form test consists of 4 skill assessments, including:

Speaking And Writing

It’s the longest and largest section of the exam.

It lasts for 50 minutes and consists of 7 PTE Core question types.

This section mainly focuses on your English speaking and writing skills in daily situations.

Question type

Description

Timing

How to do

Personal Introduction

Candidates need to introduce themselves. It’s a chance for you to get used to the technology, and the task will not affect your score.

The first 25 seconds are for prompt reading and response preparation. The next 30 seconds are your speaking time.

You have only one time to record your answer, so make sure you do it well.

Read Aloud

There will be a text of up to 60 words to be read aloud.

There are 6-7 questions in total with various lengths.

You need to answer immediately after hearing a short tone, and don’t be silent for more than 3 seconds. Start speaking when the status bar shows “Recording,” and finish before it comes to “Complete.”

Repeat Sentence

You need to listen to a sentence and repeat it.

There are 10-12 questions in total, each lasting 3-9 seconds. You’ll have 40 seconds to answer.

There’s no short tone, so you need to speak immediately after the recording finishes. Ensure you imitate the intonation and stress pattern clearly.

Describe Image

You’ll see an image and need to describe it in detail.

There will be 25 seconds to observe and prepare your answer. The response time is 40 seconds.

You should identify and present the main information in the picture. A short tone will notify you when to start speaking.

Respond to a Situation

The audio will play about daily situations, and candidates will answer questions according to the content.

20 seconds are for preparation, and 40 seconds are for responding.

Taking notes is allowed, so make good use of it.

Answer Short Question

You will listen to a question and answer in one or a few words.

Each question is about 3-9 seconds long, and candidates have 10 seconds to answer.

Speak when the status box shows “Recording” as there’s no short tone.

Summarize Written Text

Candidates need to read a text of up to 200 words and then write a summary of 25-50 words.

10 minutes will be given for writing.

You should mention the text’s main point. Manage your word count by using the bottom screen button.

Write Email

You need to write an 80-120-word email to respond to a prompt.

You have 9 minutes to write.

Besides the word count button, you can use the cut, copy, and paste function to organize your email.

Reading

Reading, the second part of the PTE Core exam pattern, consists of 5 question types.

There are no time limitations in this section.

Candidates will have around 30 minutes to finish all the questions.

Question type

Description

How to do

Reading & Writing: Fill in the Blanks

The screen will display a 200-word text with blanks. Candidates need to fill these gaps by selecting the correct options from the drop-down boxes.

Left-click on the drop-down list next to the blank and choose the most suitable word. Do the same if you want to change the answer.

Multiple Choice, Multiple Answer

After reading a text of 275 words, you need to choose more than one response to answer a question.

Click on the correct options and click on them again to deselect. You’ll earn points for the correct options and lose points for the incorrect ones.

Reorder Paragraph

This task requires you to put the text boxes in the correct order. The total length is about 110 words.

Click and drag the items to the desired order. Usually, the first paragraph should contain the topic sentence.

Fill in the Blanks

Candidates need to drag the words from the box below to complete the text.

The task mostly requires your grammatical knowledge. Note that there are more options than gaps.

Multiple Choice, Single Answer

Choose only a correct answer for the question about the text’s content or tone.

Read the text carefully and eliminate the options that are unlikely to be correct.

Listening

The PTE Core tests your listening skills through 7 tasks within 30-37 minutes.

Here, timing is not applicable, either.

Question type

Description

How to do

Summarize Spoken Text

Candidates will listen to an audio of 45-75 seconds and write a summary of 20-30 words.

Listen carefully to catch the main idea and notice the word count on the left of the screen.

Multiple Choice, Multiple Answer

After listening to an audio, you need to click on the correct options to answer a multi-choice question.

Pay attention and take notes if necessary to ensure you don’t miss any option.

Fill in the Blanks

An audio will be played with the transcript. However, the transcript has some missing words, and you need to complete it.

Paying attention to the group of words around the blank will help you have the correct answer. Plus, ensure you don’t have any mistyping.

Multiple Choice, Single Answer

You will listen to a 30-60-second audio and choose only one answer for the multiple-choice question.

Focus on the first and last part of the recording to find the main idea and use choice elimination tactics.

Select Missing Word

An audio record of 20-70 seconds will be played, and candidates need to choose the most suitable word(s) to complete the recording.

Stay focused while listening and eliminate wrong choices.

Highlight Incorrect Words

You’ll listen to an audio with a transcript, and you need to point out words that are different from the content.

Move the cursor along the transcript to ensure you don’t lose track of the flow and find the incorrect word more easily.

Write from Dictation

This task includes 3-4 sentences, each in 3-5 seconds. You’ll listen to them and rewrite the content exactly.

Stay focused as you only listen once, and use the erasable whiteboard for note-taking.

PTE Core And IELTS Equivalency

The PTE Core Canada uses an AI engine to assess candidates’ English proficiency.

AI works based on data collected from thousands of test performances.

The engine was also given training according to human expertise.

HIGH IMPACT

Focus around 60–70% of study time

Task Section Skills Scored Why Important Smart Impact
Repeat Sentence (RS) Speaking & Writing Listening + Speaking Very high question count (10–12), partial credit, dual-skill scoring ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Read Aloud (RA) Speaking & Writing Reading + Speaking High question count (6–7), partial credit, supports fluency + pronunciation ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Reading & Writing: Fill in the Blanks Reading Reading + Writing High question count (5–6), partial credit, integrated scoring ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Fill in the Blanks (Reading) Reading Reading Strong reading score builder, 4–5 questions, partial credit ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Write from Dictation (WFD) Listening Listening + Writing Partial credit, integrated scoring, every correctly spelled word counts, 3–4 questions ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Listening Fill in the Blanks Listening Listening + Writing Accuracy-based, partial credit, integrated scoring, 2–3 questions ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Write Email Speaking & Writing Writing Open-ended writing task scored on 7 traits, and its total contributes to Writing and Overall score ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The official Pearson materials show that these tasks either appear often, award partial credit, or score two communicative skills at once, which is why they deserve the biggest share of preparation time.

MEDIUM IMPACT

Focus around 20–25% of study time

Task Section Skills Scored Why Important Smart Impact
Describe Image (DI) Speaking & Writing Speaking Partial credit, but only 3–4 questions and mainly single-skill ⭐⭐⭐
Respond to a Situation (RTS) Speaking & Writing Speaking Core-specific task, 2–4 questions, partial credit, useful for functional spoken English ⭐⭐⭐
Answer Short Question (ASQ) Speaking & Writing Listening + Speaking Integrated task with 5–6 questions, but correct/incorrect scoring only ⭐⭐⭐
Summarize Written Text (SWT) Speaking & Writing Reading + Writing Integrated task, but only 1–2 questions ⭐⭐⭐
Summarize Spoken Text (SST) Listening Listening + Writing Integrated task with several traits, but only 1–2 questions ⭐⭐⭐
Reorder Paragraph Reading Reading Useful reading logic task, but only 2–3 questions ⭐⭐–⭐⭐⭐

These tasks still matter, but they either appear less often than the “king tasks” or do not combine high frequency with strong partial-credit volume.

LOW IMPACT

Focus around 10–15% of study time

Task Section Skills Scored Why Important Smart Impact
MCQ Multiple Answers (Reading) Reading Reading Low frequency (1–2) and negative marking style
MCQ Single Answer (Reading) Reading Reading Low frequency, correct/incorrect only
MCQ Multiple Answers (Listening) Listening Listening Low frequency and risky because points are deducted for wrong options
MCQ Single Answer (Listening) Listening Listening Low frequency, correct/incorrect only
Select Missing Word Listening Listening Only 1–2 questions, correct/incorrect

Pearson’s score guide shows these tasks are generally low in number and do not offer the same score-building potential as the heavy partial-credit integrated tasks.

PTE Respond to the Situation

Respond to a Situation (For the Updated Test)

Instructions

Practice prompt

You are doing a group project for a class. The other members of your group have asked you to prepare the slides for the presentation. You are willing to do the slides but need them to give you all the information that you have to include before the weekend. What would you say to them?

Important Test Tips

Do

Don’t

Respond to a Situation – Excellent sample answer

Answer A

“Hi everyone! I’m happy to create the slides for this presentation we’re giving. To be successful though, I’ll need you to each send me all the information and content you’ve gathered for our group project before this coming weekend so I’ll have enough time to complete the slides. Please send the information to my email by end of day this Friday – does that work for everyone?”

ANSWER EXPLANATION:

This is an excellent answer for the content. It covers the main information including: 1) You are willing to design the slides, 2) You need more information and 3) You need this information before this weekend. This means the primary communication goal has been fully met. The test taker has communicated with ease and the response is fully developed. The response is polite, in the first person and also has the correct tone (being persuasive and strong enough) to request the slides.

Practice prompt

You are doing a group project for a class. The other members of your group have asked you to prepare the slides for the presentation. You are willing to do the slides but need them to give you all the information that you have to include before the weekend. What would you say to them?

Respond to a Situation – Average sample answer

Answer B

“Hi everyone. So for this presentation, I can definitely create the slides as long you each provide me with the information that I can put into the slides. Can you make sure you send me the information by Saturday latest?”

ANSWER EXPLANATION:

This partially achieves the primary goal of the situation because there is one error with the response saying ‘by Saturday’ – when in fact the prompt says by before the weekend. The response could also be more persuasive to achieve a higher mark – ‘Can you…’ is overly polite considering the importance of the request.

Practice prompt

You are doing a group project for a class. The other members of your group have asked you to prepare the slides for the presentation. You are willing to do the slides but need them to give you all the information that you have to include before the weekend. What would you say to them?

Respond to a Situation – Needs improvement sample answer

Answer C

“Hello, I am doing a group project for my class. I have been asked to prepare slides for the presentation and I am willing to do the slides but you need to give me all the information that you have before this weekend. Thank you.”

ANSWER EXPLANATION:

The response copies the prompt too heavily and the test taker has not changed the language to meet the primary communicational goal of the context. The test taker has just changed the pronouns from the prompt (you for I) and copied the information from the prompt. This response would score very low for content.

Practice prompt

You are doing a group project for a class. The other members of your group have asked you to prepare the slides for the presentation. You are willing to do the slides but need them to give you all the information that you have to include before the weekend. What would you say to them?

Respond to a Situation – Needs improvement sample answer

Answer D

“The situation is about a person and that person is doing a group project for class. They are doing some slides and they want all the information from their teammates so they can do the slides. They want the information before the weekend.”

ANSWER EXPLANATION:

The test taker does not understand the requirements of the task and is summarizing the situation. No primary communication goal is achieved because the test taker is not responding to the situation. This response would receive a very low score for content.

Practice prompt

You are doing a group project for a class. The other members of your group have asked you to prepare the slides for the presentation. You are willing to do the slides but need them to give you all the information that you have to include before the weekend. What would you say to them?

Respond to a Situation – Needs improvement sample answer

Answer E

“Thank you so much to explain the situation that I have in this response. In this task I will explain the situation at length and provide some polite language to respond to the situation. I want to start by saying that this response is about doing a group project for the class. I want to also say that it’s about slides for a presentation and it’s also about giving you all the information before the weekend. Overall the situation is very informative and interesting.”

ANSWER EXPLANATION:

This is a very poor answer for this question. This is a pre-memorised response with large chunks of language not specific to the prompt.

Practice prompt

Email:

Hello Julia,

I heard you are thinking about letting people work from home for two days every week. I hope you don’t mind me contacting you about this. I want to tell you the reasons why I like this idea.

Nowadays, working from home is becoming easy due to video calls. We can communicate and collaborate together with work people even from our home. We don’t need to go to office.

Another reason is transport. Travelling to work can waste time. Therefore, I think working from home is productive. We can get more work done at home.

Finally, working from home can help support worker’s family life. I think a happy worker is productive.

Thanks,
Maria
(118 words)

Comment on Response:

The test taker demonstrates the ability to produce a clear, moderately complex text on a familiar concrete topic. They use an appropriate level of formality for this context (e.g., “I hope you don’t mind me contacting you about this”) and can convey their feelings with some clear explanations. However, the content may express limited depth and detail and does not demonstrate a wide range of complex sentence structures.

The response addresses all parts of the task sufficiently and appropriately. The test taker makes an effort to elaborate on some ideas and to include details, though there are areas that need impression (e.g., they have written “collaborate” which may be an attempt at “collaboration”). At 118 words, the response is appropriate in length. The test taker demonstrates an awareness of email conventions with a suitable salutation at the beginning and a sign-off at the end.

The response is organized into paragraphs, each covering a separate point and containing some explanation. The paragraphs are linked into a cohesive text (e.g., “Another reason...”, “Finally...”). The response contains three spelling/typing errors.

Extracted Text:

Email task is first scored on content and then on form. If no response, or an irrelevant response is given, the content is scored as 0. Responses that contain significant amounts of pre-prepared/memorized material are not relevant responses and do not properly address the prompt. If the response is of the appropriate length (form), a score will be given and the response will then be rated on the remaining traits: email conventions, organization, vocabulary, grammar, and spelling. The scores for these traits are used to calculate the final total score for the task.

The total score for the task contributes to the communicative skill score for writing, as well as to the overall score reported for performance on the entire test.

Sample Question 1:

You are a volunteer at a local animal shelter and you want to invite more adults to adopt a pet. Write an email to the subscribers of your newsletter, introducing three animals that are looking for a new home.

Your introductions must be based on the following three themes:

- Personality

- Health

- Compatibility

- You should include all three themes. Provide supporting photos for your introductions.

Hello Subscribers,

I heard you are thinking about adopting a pet. I hope you don’t mind me contacting you about this. I want to introduce you to three amazing animals at our shelter who are looking for a loving home.

First, meet Buddy, a playful 2-year-old Labrador. He’s full of energy and loves outdoor adventures. Buddy is in excellent health, fully vaccinated, and neutered. He’s great with kids and other pets, making him perfect for a family.

Next is Mittens, a sweet and quiet 4-year-old cat. She’s very affectionate and loves cuddles. Mittens is in great health, spayed, and litter-trained. She would thrive in a calm home, especially with adults or seniors.

Finally, say hello to Charlie, a cheerful 1-year-old rabbit. He’s curious and loves to explore. Charlie is healthy, vaccinated, and easy to care for. He’s ideal for first-time pet owners or families with older children.

Thanks for considering adoption,
Rahul,
Volunteer at ABC Shelter.

- Water

Another method is proper watering. Water early in the morning to prevent evaporation, and avoid overwatering as it can rot the roots. Always check if the topsoil feels dry before watering again.

Following these steps will help your plants thrive and bloom beautifully.
